Oleoresin yield and carbon stocks in tapped subtropical Pinus elliottii forests

چکیده
Background Low-cost methods to mitigate the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and their implications on global climate change have received considerable attention in the last years [1,2]. Afforestation is an important alternative to reduce the rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration due to the system’s ability to fix carbon in forest biomass and soil [3]. Several studies have been performed to estimate carbon sequestration in temperate, tropical, and mediterranean forests ecosystems [4,5]. However, there are no reports related to carbon balance in pine forests used for oleoresin tapping grown under subtropical climate. The main goal of this research is to estimate the effect of resin tapping on C sequestration by Pinus elliottii forests.

Altitudinal variation in soil organic carbon stock in coniferous subtropical and broadleaf temperate forests in Garhwal Himalaya
BACKGROUND The Himalayan zones, with dense forest vegetation, cover a fifth part of India and store a third part of the country reserves of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, the details of altitudinal distribution of these carbon stocks, which are vulnerable to forest management and climate change impacts, are not well known. RESULTS This article reports the results of measuring the stocks ...
متن کاملStudy on Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii) as a Short Rotation Forestry in the North of Iran
Forests of Iran located on the Southern border of the Caspian Sea cover 1.9 million hectares. The Caspian forests are divided into four separate forestry areas. One of these being Guilan influx area with total area of 565000 hectares. About 30 to 40 percent of Guilan province forests are suitable to short rotation forestry for afforestation. Slash pine (Pinus elliottii) is one of the main exo...
متن کاملReference Genes for qPCR Analysis in Resin-Tapped Adult Slash Pine As a Tool to Address the Molecular Basis of Commercial Resinosis
Pine oleoresin is a major source of terpenes, consisting of turpentine (mono- and sesquiterpenes) and rosin (diterpenes) fractions. Higher oleoresin yields are of economic interest, since oleoresin derivatives make up a valuable source of materials for chemical industries. Oleoresin can be extracted from living trees, often by the bark streak method, in which bark removal is done periodically, ...
متن کاملEven-Aged vs. Uneven-Aged Silviculture: Implications for Multifunctional Management of Southern Pine Ecosystems
We evaluated evenand uneven-aged silvicultural options for slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) using empirical data and the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) model. Data were collected from a mature unthinned slash pine plantation in a flatwoods site in Florida, and used to simulate six scenarios of evenand uneven-aged silvicultural regimes applied to slash pine stands, including a no-action o...
متن کاملModeling the effects of forest management on in situ and ex situ longleaf pine forest carbon stocks
Assessment of forest carbon storage dynamics requires a variety of techniques including simulation models. We developed a hybrid model to assess the effects of silvicultural management systems on carbon (C) budgets in longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) plantations in the southeastern U.S. To simulate in situ C pools, the model integrates a growth and yield model with species-specific allomet...
